A Minnesotan of Norwegian extraction, he's written a memoir of the year he and his wife and infant son spent in Trondheim, Norway, where he was on a Fulbright scholarship to learn about his roots and acquaint himself with Norwegian culture. As he writes it, this culture consists in large part of very long dark winters, uniquely Norwegian humor and toughness, ice and cold, skiing, and various kinds of preserved fish washed down, if possible, with aquavit.
